DIY Garage Cabinets Video

For most of us, the garage is more than just a parking space. It’s also storage space for outdoor toys and gardening gear. Sometimes, it's a workshop for home projects and hobbies. Installing upper cabinets is a way to provide lots of storage options for tools, painting supplies, and the rest of the stuff that accumulates in a garage. And the cabinet doors not only help to keep the contents clean, but they also give the garage a neat and well-organized appearance.

Materials List

  • Level
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Electric Drill
  • Screws
  • Hammer
  • Stud Finder

Consider How And Where You Will Mount Your Cabinets

Draw a level line along the wall to create a base cabinet top reference. Draw reference lines for the upper cabinets based on the base cabinet line. Measure down from the upper cabinet top line 30" and mark reference lines for the bottom of the upper cabinets.

Finding Studs

Make sure that you are screwing it into the studs on the wall. To find the studs, gently tap on the wall with a hammer. When you hit a stud, the sound will be duller and not as hollow as hitting just wall.

Tip: Using a stud finder is easiest.

Leveling Your Garage Wall Cabinet

Before installation, make a mark on the stud where you want to attach the cabinet. Using a level, mark a spot on the second stud, horizontal to the first mark. Once you have both spots marked, confirm that they are parallel to one another.

How to Install

Locate the two wooden rails on the back of your cabinet: one running along the top of your cabinet and the other along the bottom. Using 3-inch long, flat head screws, screw your cabinet securely to the wall, being sure to penetrate the rails. Attach the screws to the cabinet, be sure to use a washer between each screw and the cabinet. This will ensure the screws don’t slip with wear.
